Larycia Hawkins is a tenured professor at Wheaton College who pledged to wear a hijab throughout Advent season to show her support for her Muslim neighbors and friends. Hawkins, the political science professor, has been suspended and placed on administration leave, not for decision to wear a hijab, but for her comments regarding God and Allah.
In a Facebook post from December 10, she wrote, “I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God.”
