That 23 Jump Street-Men in Black crossover movie might actually happen

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill buddy movie 23 Jump Street will, in fact, be a crossover film with Men in Black. The idea for combining the two franchises was first leaked as part of Sony's devastating hack in 2014, and now several industry publications have confirmed that the studio is moving ahead with the project.
The two stars will be returning to reprise their roles as Jenko and Schmidt, but the other dynamic duo behind the Jump Street movies — Phil Lord and Chris Miller — will merely be producing. Lord and Miller co-directed the original film, as well as the 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street, and they were widely credited for making the movies such a success. The two also demonstrated their talents with The Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. When the Men in Black-meets-Jump Street idea first surfaced in 2014, Lord and Miller were on board, but they've been forced to give up the director's chair due to a scheduling conflict with Disney's upcoming Han Solo Star Wars spinoff movie.

So crazy that it might be good?
James Bobin, who directed The Muppets, The Muppets Most Wanted, and this year's upcoming Alice in Wonderland sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, will take on directorial duties instead, according to reports. Production will apparently start in June, and a script from Rodney Rothman (who had a hand in writing 22 Jump Street) is in the studio's possession. That said, the film has yet to be officially greenlit.

As stated in leaked emails from 2014, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and others from the three Men in Black films are not expected to appear in the movie. According to Variety, Sony is envisioning the Jump Street crossover movie as a way to relaunch Men in Black. That suggests whoever secures the roles of the agents in 23 Jump Street will also be tapped for a legitimate Men in Black film as well.
Let's hope that this wacky idea turns out to be fun on the big screen. For now, we can't say we're quite as excited as Jonah Hill, who said in a leaked 2014 email: "jump street merging with mib i think that’s clean and rad and powerful."
