Warren — A 74-year-old man received second-degree burns when a furnace exploded early Monday
at a Warren industrial facility, according to police.
The Center Line resident suffered burns to his hands and arms around 6:15 a.m. at Formsprag Clutch, located at 23601 Hoover Road, Warren Police Lt. Dan Novak said.
“It was during the lighting process of one of the heat treating furnaces that the explosion took place,” Novak said. “You’re dealing with gas and a lot of fire and heat.”
Novak said the employee was seeking treatment at St. John Macomb Hospital early Monday but may not have to be admitted.
“He has full range of motion in his hands,” Novak said. “It’s not expected to be a long-term injury.”
Novak said it remains unclear how the furnace exploded. The equipment normally is used to harden and strengthen metals.
Formsprag Clutch is a company that designs, manufactures and delivers clutches to the power transmission market, according to its website.
Photos from the scene show a glass window blown out of the building. Emergency crews were on the scene early Monday.
Novak said the explosion appeared to have been a workplace accident with no criminal activity involved.
“We’ll take a report on it but there wouldn’t be any investigation on our part,” he said.
A representative with Formsprag Clutch declined to comment on the incident Monday
